Web developers like smog!

We have just managed to find ourselves a new web developer to join our team. Doesn't sound like exciting news, but we have been suprised by how hard it is to find somebody decent.

There are certainly no shortage of agencies out there who hound you on a daily basis, but the quality of some of the candidates has been dissapointing. The agencies admit themselves that it is very hard to find decent developers who are available.

It makes it worse when you are based in a lovely part of the country, rather than a smoggy city. Seems most good developers want to work for large companies in large cities rather than taking a risk with a small company with big plans.

Welcome to my blog

Hi all

Welcome to my first post on my new blog. The aim of this blog is to keep a record of what I have been doing at work, with the hope that somebody out there might find it remotely interesting!

I am a Director at UK Power Limited, a company that operates the sites ukpower.co.uk and switchwise.com. Both are comparison and switching sites for gas and electricity, with Switchwise.com also having tools to compare mortgages, loans, broadband, etc.

While our competitors include the likes of uswitch.com and moneysupermarket.com, we are a small company and so I get involved in all areas of the business, from site development, supplier liaison to sales and marketing.

As I try new things or overcome obstacles at work, I will let you know here and hopefully you can benefit from my experiences.
